The later Chromebooks with the Intel chip will boot USB Kali with no problems, but the Acer Chromebook doesn't seem to like it. Since 8gb isn't enough to run an OS, I want to run it off the SD card.

Will not bother with a dual-boot setup as disk space is a major issue. Booted again with Linux Mint Cinnamon v19 on the USB drive and that worked and did recognize the USB mouse and WiFi worked fine with no histrionics. I unfortunately never did get Kali to boot on a Chromebook from a USB. I have a Dell Mini laptop with an 8gb SSD. I was able to boot to the USB drive, but Lubuntu would only boot to a black blank screen.

Doesn't seem to load no-matter what I try. The only thing I couldn't get working within the chrooted Kali was Tor. You might be able to use a different Kali version name in place of 'sana', I didn't bother checking that out too much as sana is great anyway. (probably not a good idea on a Chromebook, not much space on the SSD.

If you have space left, install all of Kali with. So you can theoretically installkali on SSD but then you’re unable to install it when connected to another PC, since it has no grub boot method. The grub file is installed on your hard drive EFI partition. to check the list of Linux distros available, sana was the one I went with as it was the latest available at the time I originally installed, there may be a later version now. Installing kali on a USB device does not cause grub to be installed. Sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -r sana -t xfce (amend as required) Open shell using CTRL+ALT+T and typing shell. I found the best way is to CHROOT in to Kali SANA using my Acer Chromebook 13. After many different approaches and attempts since my original post
